First Adult Win of Head Season At Runcorn

On Saturday 28th September, Liverpool Victoria made the short journey to Runcorn to participate in Runcorn Small Boats Head, a 4.5 kilometre head race. Malcolm Green kindly agreed to tow to this event and the club is thankful to him and Becky Walters for transporting boats to this event. The conditions were difficult with gusts of strong wind and spells of rain but the course was mostly sheltered so the crews were able to have good rows, even if they had to battle the elements for large parts of the course.
Many of the crews attending this event were participating in their first head race of the season as they did not attend Chester Long Distance Sculls the previous week and gave solid performances upon which to build during winter training. Mike Vick also secured the first adult win of head season in the Op MasG/H 1x category despite having to overtake and pull away from his opposition from Royal Chester RC due to the handicap system. There were also strong performances from Becky Walters in the W MasB/C 1x and Paul Campbell and Roger Smith in the Op MasA/C 2x in their first head races in a small boat.
There was only one junior crew entered, Harvey and Madeline, participating in their first race. They put in a spirited performance and gained a lot of experience from rowing on a long and difficult course in tough conditions.
The nights are drawing in and the clubs winter training officially begins this week, giving rowers the chance to build up their fitness for better results in head races and regattas next summer.
