LVRC Success at British Indoors

Last weekend saw some fantastic results from junior members of Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club at the virtual British Indoor Rowing Championships.

The Championships are normally held in London in December but this year moved online, with all participants having to link up to the competition via the monitor on their ergometer. This was a very high standard competition and drew participants from around the world.

On Saturday, Flynn Jones set a time of 6:30.5 in the Junior men’s 2000m event, putting him 15th overall but 7th of the British competitors. The winning time (also GB) was 5:54.7 set by Gabriel Obholzer of Tideway Scullers, from a famous family, whose members rowed for Oxford University and Great Britain. Not bad company!

Also on Saturday, Emily Bernhem set a time of 7:38.4 in the Junior women’s 2000m event, putting her 21st overall but 15th of the British competitors. The winning time of 7:04.2 (also GB) was set by Meg Knight of Trentham Boat Club, so there was local competition in the event.

Sunday saw Haig and Ethan Bainbridge competing in the Year 9, 4 minute race. Haig covered 1125m, putting him 3rd equal, while Ethan covered 1086m, putting him 11th in the competition. James Gleed of Newark Rowing Club won with 1180m.

Later on Sunday afternoon, Haig and Ethan competed in the Yr9 500m sprint, with Haig finishing in 5th, with a time of 1:37.7 and Ethan finishing in 13th, with a time of 1:43.8. The winning time of 1:33.4 was set by Jacob Len of Henley Rowing Club.

Emily competed again in the Junior women’s 500m, where she finished 16th in a time of 1:42.5. Meg Knight of Trentham won once again in a time of 1:31.9.

Our four Vics representatives are to be congratulated on their fantastic performances and they are a credit to the hard work that they and Lesley Kuguloglu have put in over one of the most difficult periods that the club has had to face, with very limited training time due to Covid19.

We are just getting back on the water and these performances should be an inspiration to all of us for the next season!
